Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), commonly referred to as abortion, is a procedure used to end a pregnancy. There are two primary methods of abortion: medical abortion (using medication) and surgical abortion (using a procedure). Understanding these methods, their effectiveness, and their potential risks can help individuals make informed decisions. Involves taking two different medications. The first medication (mifepristone) is taken at a clinic or healthcare provider’s office to block the hormone progesterone. The second medication (misoprostol) is taken at home or a clinic to induce contractions and expel the pregnancy. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and heavy bleeding. Less commonly, infection or incomplete abortion may occur. A suction device is used to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. Typically performed up to 12-14 weeks of pregnancy.
